Skin Microneedling at Sun & Skin Medical Centre

Sun & Skin Medical Centre offers skin microneedling in Mount Eliza, performed by fully qualified skin therapists. This minimally invasive treatment is useful in treating a variety of skin concerns by stimulating collagen production.

What is skin microneedling?

Also know as skin needling, or collagen induction therapy, skin microneedling creates very small punctures to the skin, delivered via a specialised medical device that contains very fine needles. These stimulate the body’s natural healing response and collagen production, which ultimately results in skin repair.

At Sun & Skin Medical Centre, we use Dermapen 4 technology as our preferred skin microneedling technology. Dermapen 4 contains the most advanced needle cartridge, which provides patients with a safer, more effective treatment.

What can skin microneedling assist with?

Skin microneedling with the Dermapen 4 can be performed on various areas of the body, and can be advantageous in the treatment of:

  • Ageing skin/vertical lip lines
  • Hyperpigmentation, age spots and uneven skin tone
  • Skin tightening and rejuvenation
  • Tightening of dilated or enlarged pores
  • Acne
  • Stretch marks
  • Alopecia

How does skin microneedling work?

skin microneedling dermapen

The Dermapen 4 contains a single use, sterile cartridge which houses the micro-fine needles. When the pen is rolled over the skin, these needles penetrate the strata of the skin (the dermis and epidermis) at a depth of 0.25-2.5mm. These micro-punctures create microscopic wounds within the skin. This triggers the body’s natural wound healing processes, which results in:

  • Increased blood flow to the treated area
  • Stimulation of new blood vessel growth
  • Synthesis of proteoglycans (such as hyaluronic acid)
  • New collagen synthesis
  • Cellular lysis (destruction of damaged cells).

The result is a significant improvement to skin texture and skin tone. This progressive result occurs over a period of weeks to months for month patients.

What can I expect from skin microneedling?

Skin microneedling with the Dermapen 4 is generally very well tolerated by most patients. Your skin or beauty therapist is able to vary the depth of the needling, and this allows them to treat more delicate areas more gently, as well as to target scars and blemishes more effectively.

Contrary to what many people think, skin microneedling does not generally cause a lot of visible bleeding. When the micro-fine needles are moved across the skin, they create pinpoint bleeding in the skin, but due to the super fine nature of the needles, the skin is clean and intact at the completion of the treatment.

Most people will experience some mild redness for 24-48 hours, and possibly some mild swelling (oedema) of the skin. In some instances, slight bruising can occur in delicate areas, or in those that have required a stronger treatment.

Are there aftercare instructions following skin microneedling?

We recommend that you try to avoid touching treated areas the day after your skin microneedling treatment. You may apply mineral powder the following day, however we recommend that you avoid skin products or makeup on the day of treatment.

Your skin therapist will be able to make specific recommendations for you following your skin microneedling. Regular treatments with the Dermapen 4, along with the daily use of DP Dermaceuticals products will allow for long term correction of the skin.
