Regular visits to a skin cancer doctor are important

It is important for the health of all Victorians to regularly have skin checks with an accredited Melbourne skin cancer doctor.

It is only natural that our moles, sunspots and skin lesions change throughout our lifetime, and without regular consultations with a skin cancer doctor, it can be difficult to tell what is a regular, benign sunspot as compared to a sinister skin lesion.

A qualified skin cancer doctor will be able to advise you on what type of skin check or other diagnostic testing is most appropriate for you. Regular consultations are vital to the detection of skin cancers and melanomas. In most cases, the sooner a suspicious skin lesion is detected, the sooner your skin cancer doctor can implement a treatment plan, therefore achieving the best possible outcomes for the patient.

Skin cancers are not limited to one type of skin or body part; they can occur on any type of skin, and anywhere on the body, including in areas that do not get regular sun exposure.

At Sun & Skin Medical Centre, when you book in to see a skin cancer doctor, you can be sure that you will be in the care of a medical professional who is experienced in performing full skin checks, mole checks and mole maps.

A skin care doctor can help with cosmetic concerns too

Visiting a cosmetic doctor is also beneficial for patients who wish to discuss cosmetic or anti-aging treatments. Our skin care doctors can offer expert advice on which skin treatments are best for your skin. We can help you to achieve a more youthful complexion, improving the hydration, texture, and overall health of your skin. Sun & Skin Medical Centre also stocks a wide range of quality skin care products; your skin care doctor will be able to offer their recommendation on the brand and products that suit your skin.

What happens during a consultation with a skin care doctor

When you make your appointment to visit a skin care doctor at Sun & Skin Medical Centre, our reception staff will provide you with some basic instructions to note in preparation for your visit. You should aim to arrive five minutes early to your appointment.

Regardless of whether your skin care doctor appointment is for a medical or cosmetic reason, you should attempt to remove all make up, and if you’re having a full skin check or mole map, please remove your nail polish as well.

For skin checks and mole maps, nude coloured underwear is also recommended. You will need to undress down to your underwear for the examination; if you would like a modesty gown, please ask our staff and they can provide you with one.

During the examination, your skin cancer doctor will use a dermatoscope. This is a special medical tool that allows them to visualize below the skin’s surface, assisting them to identify any suspicious lesions. Skin examination with a dermatoscope is painless.

At Sun & Skin Medical Centre, our skin cancer doctors use state of the art FotoFinder technology to conduct mole maps. In just a few minutes, a comprehensive mole map of the full skin surface can be conducted. Your skin cancer doctor will then be able to use this imaging technology to detect any new skin lesions, or to monitor changes to existing skin lesions over time, with follow-up consultations.

In case your skin cancer doctor identifies any suspicious skin lesions, they will be able to recommend further steps. These might include photographing the lesion for monitoring/surveillance, or perhaps they may suggest taking a skin biopsy (skin sample) to send off to the pathology lab for analysis.  Once the results of the biopsy are reported back to your skin cancer doctor, they will contact you to inform you, and can arrange for any required treatments to take place.
